Allotments

Waltham St Lawrence Parish Council provides allotment gardens to residents as a community service, offering space for gardening, sustainable living and enjoyment of the outdoors.

The Parish allotments are located on The Street, opposite Paradise Cottages in Waltham St Lawrence. Each plot provides approximately 1100 sq ft of space per garden. More information can be found below on this page or you can contact Mrs MJ Streather the council clerk directly at parishclerk@wslpc.uk

Further Information:

The allotment grounds cover a rectangular strip of land, including a mix of cultivated gardens and woodland, with a public footpath running the length of the area. Currently, there are 13 allotment plots, shared by seven tenants. Each allotment garden fronts the footpath and stretches back to the northern boundary hedge, providing ample space for various gardening activities.

  • Size: Each allotment garden measures approximately 30-34 ft in frontage and offers around 1100 sq ft of gardening space.
  • Facilities: The allotments include four communal water taps and a seating area near a wildflower area.
  • Access: A public footpath runs along the entire allotment site, providing easy access to plots.

Allotment Rules and Responsibilities

Tenants of the Waltham St Lawrence allotments are required to follow specific rules to maintain the quality and orderliness of the community space. Here are the main rules and responsibilities:

  • Annual Rent: Allotments are rented for a nominal annual fee, currently set at £20.00, payable in advance every April.

  • Maintenance: Tenants must keep their allotment free from weeds, well-maintained, and fertile. Pathways and adjoining tracks should be kept clear and passable.

  • Bonfires: Bonfires are allowed but must be managed responsibly to avoid nuisance to other residents.

  • Prohibited Structures: Sheds, greenhouses, and any permanent structures are not permitted on allotments without prior written consent from the council.

  • Personal Belongings: Any equipment or apparatus left on the allotment is the responsibility of the tenant.

  • Environmental Safety: Tenants should not bring toxic chemicals or hazardous materials onto the site and should ensure safe gardening practices.

Tenancy Agreement and Conditions

Each allotment tenant enters into a tenancy agreement with the Parish Council, which includes the following conditions:

  • Single-Purpose Use: Allotments must be used solely for gardening purposes.

  • Subletting: Tenants may not sublet or transfer their allotment to another party without council approval.

  • Pets: Dogs are allowed on the allotment only when on a lead.

  • Right of Access: The Parish Council reserves the right to inspect allotments to ensure compliance with terms.

  • Termination of Tenancy: Tenancies may be terminated by either party with twelve months’ written notice or by the council for specific reasons, including non-payment of rent or breach of agreement terms.
